What this task is

TRUE: the passage states the statement.

FALSE: the passage states the opposite.

NOT GIVEN: the passage does not mention it.

Answer from the passage only, not from your own knowledge. If the passage does not settle it, the answer is NOT GIVEN, however true the statement seems in real life.

Passage

Most students travelled to college by bus.

The majority of students travelled by bus.

TRUE "Majority" means the same as "most". The passage says it.
All students travelled by bus.

FALSE The passage says most, not all. "All" contradicts it.
Students chose the bus because it was cheaper.

NOT GIVEN Perhaps it was cheaper, but the passage never says why they chose it.

The traps

The common mistakes in this question type. Learn to spot each one before test day.

But it sounds logical

The statement feels right because it makes sense, or because nearby sentences point towards it. IELTS does not ask what is probably true. If no sentence in the passage states it either way, the answer is NOT GIVEN, however logical it feels.

All, always, proved

"All" against "most". "Always" against "often". "Proved" against "suggested". A statement that overstates a hedged claim is FALSE. One that adds something the passage never touches is NOT GIVEN.

Familiar words, different claim

The statement recycles the passage's vocabulary around a claim the passage never makes. Recognising words is not the same as finding the statement.

What to do next time

Demand evidence for every answer. TRUE needs a sentence that says it. FALSE needs a sentence that contradicts it. No sentence, NOT GIVEN. Never answer from what you know about the world.

Statements follow passage order. Search forward from the last answer's location, not from the top.

Answer each statement only from the sentence that proves it. What you chose for the last statement tells you nothing about this one.
