Task 2 (Essay)

Write an essay of at least 250 words to answer an opinion question or discuss a problem.

What this task is

Task 2 asks you to take a position, or to discuss a problem and its solutions. Read the question to see which one it wants before you plan.

Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing score. Build your answer one paragraph at a time, with clear reasons and examples.

The traps

The common mistakes in this question type. Learn to spot each one before test day.

Missing part of the question

If the prompt asks about "the impact of cars on city centers", an essay only about "pollution" misses part of the question. Answer the question you were given.

Sitting on the fence

State your position early and keep it clear.

Overcomplicated vocabulary

Use clear words you can control. Big words do not automatically raise your score.

What to do next time

Choose your structure after you understand what the prompt asks.
Use a clear four-paragraph structure. Give each paragraph one main job.
For each main idea, give a reason and a specific example. Keep one main idea in each body paragraph.
